CNC Turning vs Milling vs Mill-Turn — Which Process for Your Part?

If your part has a circular cross-section symmetric about a central axis, turning is almost always the right answer. Here’s how to be certain — and when mill-turn handles both in a single setup.

CNC Turning
Workpiece rotates · stationary cutting tool
  • Shafts, pins, bushings, connectors, nozzles
  • External and internal threads — all standards
  • Concentric bores — best achievable roundness
  • High L/D ratio — long slender shafts
  • Bar-feed automation for high volume
  • Non-rotational prismatic geometry
CNC Milling
Tool rotates · workpiece is stationary
  • Flat faces, pockets, slots, counterbores
  • Complex 3D surfaces (5-axis)
  • Housings, brackets, enclosures, plates
  • Cylindrical features — possible but not optimal
  • Long slender shafts — turning wins on accuracy
Best for: brackets, housings, enclosures, plates — any part where the geometry is prismatic rather than rotational.
Mill-Turn (Live Tooling)
Turning + milling in a single setup
  • Rotational parts with off-axis features
  • Cross-holes, radial slots, milled flats
  • Eliminates secondary milling setup
  • Better positional accuracy — no repositioning error
  • Faster total cycle — combined operations
Best for: shafts with bolt holes, connectors with flats, valve bodies with radial porting — “mostly turned but with milled features.”

Precision Turning Tolerances — What We Measure and How

Every precision turned part goes through a documented inspection process. CMM measurement with actual vs. nominal deviation — not a pass/fail stamp.

Ra 0.1 μmMirror finish — extra finishing passesProfilometer
ISO 286 shaft/bore fit classes — H7/h6, H7/p6, etc.
We machine to any ISO 286 fit class. Specify the nominal dimension and fit class (e.g. Ø25 H7) — we calculate the tolerance band and verify on CMM. Common fits we turn every day: H7/h6 (sliding · clearance), H7/k6 (light press), H7/n6 (medium press), H7/p6 (interference). Call out the fit class — we interpret it.
L/D ratio — the turning tolerance trap
Shafts with length-to-diameter ratio above 4:1 require a tailstock to prevent deflection during cutting. Above 8:1, a steady rest is added at intermediate points. At high L/D ratios, achievable OD tolerance degrades — ±0.003mm at L/D 2:1 becomes ±0.010mm at L/D 8:1 with standard setups. Our DFM flags this and recommends whether to reduce the ratio, increase the diameter, or use precision fixturing.

5-Step Inspection Process

1.Drawing review & inspection plan
Every GD&T callout mapped to a measurement method before first chips fly. Critical characteristics identified and flagged.
2.First-article verification
First turned part fully inspected before batch continues. Setup adjusted if any dimension falls outside the process window — not just outside tolerance.
3.In-process gauging
Critical ODs and IDs gauged at regular intervals during production. Auto-gauging on high-volume runs compensates for tool wear automatically.
4.CMM final inspection
Zeiss / Renishaw CMM on all critical features. Actual vs. nominal deviation documented for every callout. CMM accuracy: ±0.0008mm MPE. Temperature-stabilised measurement room at 20°C ±0.5°C.
5.Report & certificate issued
CMM dimensional report and material mill certificate enclosed with every order. Full DHR documentation available for medical and aerospace applications.

CNC Turned Parts Pricing — What Drives the Cost

Four variables explain 90% of CNC turning price differences. Understanding them before you upload lets you make smarter decisions before any metal is cut.

Cost Drivers for Turned Parts

Material — alloy grade determines cycle time
Brass C360 machines fastest — its machinability index is 100 (the reference baseline). Aluminum 6061 is 80–90. Stainless 316L is 45–55. Titanium Ti-6Al-4V is 30–40. A titanium part has 2.5–3× the cycle time of the same part in aluminum — reflected transparently in the quote as a line item. Grade matters: 316L costs more per hour than 303.
  • Highest cost driver on exotic materials
Quantity — setup cost per piece is the key
Setup cost for a turned part — programming, tooling, first-article inspection — is fixed per job. At 1 piece, you absorb 100% of it. At 50 pieces, it’s 2% per part. The cost curve drops steeply between 1–20 pieces and flattens above 100. If you can order 10 instead of 1, you almost always should — unless the design is unproven.
  • Most impactful at low volume
L/D ratio — long slender shafts need more setup
L/D <4:1: standard turning, no premium. L/D 4–8:1: tailstock support required — adds setup time. L/D >8:1: steady rest support needed at intermediate points, multiple setup positions, slower feed rates to avoid deflection. A 300mm shaft at Ø10mm (L/D=30) requires specialist fixturing that adds 40–80% to setup cost vs the same shaft at Ø25mm (L/D=12).
  • Geometry-dependent
Tolerance & inspection — CMM time adds up fast
General turning (±0.050mm) requires caliper spot-check — negligible inspection cost. Precision turning (±0.010mm) adds gauge verification. Tight turning (±0.003mm) adds full CMM measurement with thermal stabilisation — typically 15–25 minutes per part. At 1 piece, that doubles the cost. At 100 pieces, it’s insignificant. Specifying ±0.003mm on features that only need ±0.010mm is the most common unnecessary cost driver in turned part drawings.
  • Scales with quantity

CNC Turned Parts Manufacturer — Questions Answered

What is the difference between CNC turning and CNC milling?
CNC turning rotates the workpiece against a stationary cutting tool — ideal for shafts, bushings, and anything symmetric about an axis of rotation. CNC milling rotates the cutting tool against a stationary workpiece — ideal for prismatic parts with flat faces, pockets, and slots. Rough rule: if your part looks like a cylinder, turn it. If it looks like a block, mill it. Parts that need both — a shaft with cross-holes or flats — are handled on our mill-turn centers in one setup.
What is live tooling and why does it matter for turned parts?
Live tooling means driven milling tools mounted in the lathe turret — drill radial holes, cut keyways and flats, mill pockets, all in the same clamping as the turning operation. Without live tooling, a shaft with cross-holes needs a second setup on a VMC, which adds repositioning error and 1–2 days of lead time. With live tooling, everything happens in one setup. If your turned part has any off-axis features, ask us about mill-turn capability before quoting.
What is the tightest tolerance you can hold on turned parts?
Our tightest standard turned tolerance is ±0.003mm on OD features in aluminum and brass, using precision setup with CMM verification and thermal stabilisation. Bore tolerances to H7 class (e.g. ±0.013mm on Ø25mm) are standard. Specifying ±0.003mm on features that functionally only need ±0.010mm adds CMM time and approximately doubles the per-part inspection cost — our DFM review identifies where it’s actually needed.
What materials can be CNC turned?
We turn aluminum (6061, 7075, 2024), stainless steel (303, 304, 316L, 17-4 PH), brass (C360), copper (C110), titanium (Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 4 CP, Grade 23 ELI), steel (4140, 4340, EN19), engineering plastics (Delrin POM, PEEK Optima, Nylon, PTFE), and exotic alloys (Inconel 718, Hastelloy C-276). All materials available from 1 piece. No material has a minimum order quantity.
What surface finish does CNC turning achieve?
Ra 0.4–0.8μm as-turned is standard and included in the base price — this is the natural result of correctly specified turning with sharp tooling. Ra 0.2μm is achievable in aluminum and brass with fine-finishing passes. Ra 0.1μm mirror finish requires additional polishing operations. Importantly, turning achieves significantly better surface finish on cylindrical features than milling — the continuous helical cutting path inherently produces a finer, more consistent surface texture.
Can you turn long shafts without deflection affecting accuracy?
Yes — we use tailstocks and steady rests for long shafts. The practical guideline: L/D ratio below 4:1 — standard turning, no support needed. L/D 4–8:1 — tailstock support added. L/D above 8:1 — steady rest at intermediate points. At very high L/D ratios (above 12:1), the achievable OD tolerance degrades regardless of fixturing; our DFM review flags this and may recommend a design change (larger diameter, or turning in two chucked halves with a joined centre).
What thread standards do you support?
We cut Metric ISO (M and MF series), Unified (UNC, UNF, UNEF), British Standard Pipe (BSPT, BSPP), British Standard (BSW, BSF), ACME, trapezoidal (Tr), and custom thread profiles for both internal and external features. Thread milling handles blind-hole internals, interrupted threads, and left-hand threads. Go/No-Go gauge verification is standard on all threaded features. We manufacture custom gauges for non-standard thread profiles.
Do you provide CMM inspection reports for turned parts?
Yes — CMM inspection on Zeiss and Renishaw CMMs with actual vs. nominal deviation documented for every critical feature, including OD, ID, runout, thread class, and surface Ra. CMM accuracy (MPE) is ±0.0008mm — well within our tightest turning tolerance. Roundness and cylindricity measurement available for precision bores and bearing journals. Reports included on all precision orders; per-part or batch statistical formats available depending on quantity and application.
