Plastic DFM Review

Wall Thickness, Bosses, Inserts and Cosmetic Surfaces Affect Cost and Quality

ABS is easier to machine than many engineering plastics, but plastic part quality can still be affected by wall stability, heat buildup, burrs, boss geometry, insert installation and finishing allowance.

Thin Walls and Large Flat Areas

Thin plastic walls can flex during machining and inspection. Large panels may need datum planning, rib support or relaxed flatness expectations.

Review wall thickness, rib layout, pocket depth, datum faces and whether the feature is cosmetic or functional.

Screw Bosses and Insert Holes

Repeated assembly should not rely on weak plastic threads unless the design allows it. Threaded inserts, boss wall thickness and heat-set method should be reviewed.

Provide insert type, hole diameter, boss OD, insert depth, pull-out requirement and assembly method when available.

Cosmetic and Painted Surfaces

Visible ABS parts may need sanding, painting, masking or texture control. Machining marks and paint buildup can affect appearance and assembly gaps.

POM / Delrin-Type Plastics
