Inconel parts are usually high-value components, so quotation should not be based on geometry alone. Before production, we review the material callout, machining difficulty, critical features and documentation requirements to reduce risk and avoid unclear expectations.

Can you machine Inconel 625 and 718?
Yes. Baosheng can review Inconel 625, Inconel 718, 600, 601, X-750 and selected nickel alloy parts for CNC milling, turning, 5-axis machining, precision machining and inspection requirements.
What makes Inconel machining difficult?Nickel alloys can work harden, retain heat near the cutting zone and increase tool wear. Tool access, cutting sequence, coolant access, chip evacuation, threads, bores and sealing faces should be reviewed before machining.
What should I include in my RFQ?Please include alloy grade, material condition, quantity, critical dimensions, threads, bores, sealing faces, surface roughness, inspection reports and material certificate requirements if available.

Machining Risks That Affect Price and Lead Time

Inconel machining cost is strongly affected by work hardening, heat buildup, tool access, threads, bores, sealing surfaces and inspection requirements. The items below help explain what our engineers review before quoting.

Work hardening risk should be reviewed before production, especially around interrupted cuts, repeated tool passes, thin walls and threaded features.

  • Review cutting sequence, tool engagement and avoid excessive rubbing.
  • Confirm whether deep features require revised corner radii or staged machining.
  • Use first article inspection to confirm critical dimensions before repeat production.

Deep pockets in nickel alloys may require additional review because tool reach, aspect ratio and chip evacuation can drive both cost and risk.

  • Review pocket depth, aspect ratio, corner radius and tool reach.
  • For challenging pockets, review whether a dynamic milling path or geometry adjustment can reduce work hardening risk.
  • Confirm whether the pocket is function-critical or can accept a larger internal radius.

Threads, bores and turned features require attention because work hardening, tool wear, galling risk and burrs can affect acceptance.

  • Confirm thread type, thread class, depth, gauge requirement and relief design.
  • Review OD/ID tolerance, bore finish, concentricity and inspection method.
  • Define burr-free areas around threads, cross holes and flow-related edges.

Inconel retains heat near the cutting zone, so coolant access, chip evacuation and stable tool paths should be reviewed early.

  • Protect sealing faces, thin walls and finished surfaces from heat-related distortion or marking.

Small or deep holes can increase tool breakage risk and make inspection more difficult, especially when they intersect bores, threads or sealing features.

  • Review coolant access, pecking strategy, exit burrs and inspection method.
  • Mark cross holes, blind holes and burr-sensitive edges clearly on the drawing.

For valve, fitting and high-temperature assemblies, sealing faces should be identified before quotation so machining, finishing and packaging can be planned correctly.

Material Fit

Not Sure If Inconel Is the Right Material?

Inconel is not always the most practical choice. If your part does not require high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance or harsh-environment performance, another material may reduce cost and lead time.

General Corrosion Resistance

304 or 316 stainless steel may be more practical when extreme heat, oxidation or chemical exposure is not required.

Cost-Sensitive Structural Parts

Carbon steel or alloy steel may be better for non-extreme applications where cost is a primary concern.

Early Prototype Validation

Aluminum or stainless prototype machining may reduce early cost before committing to high-value nickel alloy stock.

Common Questions Before Quoting

Yes. Inconel 625 and 718 can be CNC machined by milling, turning, 5-axis machining or precision machining depending on geometry, material condition, tolerance, thread, bore and inspection requirements.

Yes. Inconel is generally more difficult to machine than many stainless steels because of work hardening, heat retention, higher cutting forces and tool wear. It is usually selected when stainless steel cannot meet temperature, corrosion or oxidation requirements.
