Which stainless steel grade should I choose?
Baosheng reviews corrosion resistance, strength, machinability, surface finish, magnetic requirements, cost and application environment to recommend suitable grades such as 304, 316, 303 or 17-4 PH.
Can you machine 304 and 316 stainless steel?
Yes. We support CNC machining of 304 and 316 stainless steel parts for corrosion-resistant components, fixtures, shafts, fittings and device parts.
Can you machine small stainless turned parts?
Yes. Stainless shafts, pins, sleeves, bushings, fittings and threaded components can be produced by CNC turning or Swiss-style machining review.
Can you provide passivation or electropolishing?
Yes. Passivation, electropolishing, brushing, polishing and other surface finishing options can be reviewed based on corrosion, cleanliness and appearance requirements.
Can you support tight tolerance stainless parts?
Yes. Critical dimensions, threads, holes, OD/ID, flatness, mating faces and datum surfaces can be inspected according to drawing requirements.
Is stainless steel harder to machine than aluminum?
Yes. Stainless steel generally requires more careful tool selection, cutting strategy, heat control and burr control because of higher strength, tool wear and work-hardening behavior.

Stainless Steel Capability

When to Choose Stainless Steel CNC Machining

Material Fit

When to Choose Stainless Steel CNC Machining

Stainless steel CNC machining is often selected when a part requires corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, wear resistance, clean surfaces or long-term durability in demanding environments. It is commonly used for shafts, bushings, fittings, fixtures, medical-style components, food equipment parts, marine components, industrial hardware and precision assemblies.

Lightweight structural parts may be better suited for aluminum CNC machining. Large bent stainless panels may require stainless steel sheet metal fabrication. Highly conductive parts may be better suited for copper CNC machining or brass CNC machining.

Choose stainless steel when

You need corrosion resistance, durability, clean surfaces, threaded fittings or high-strength functional components.

Review grade carefully

304, 316, 303 and 17-4 PH solve different corrosion, strength and machinability problems.

Plan threads and burr control

Thread depth, small holes, internal passages and edge break should be defined before machining.

Define surface finish early

Passivation, electropolishing, brushing, polishing and roughness requirements affect process planning.

Grade Selection

Stainless Steel Grade Selection for CNC Machined Parts

The best stainless steel grade depends on corrosion environment, strength requirement, machinability, surface finish, magnetic behavior, cost and application. 304 is often used for general corrosion-resistant parts. 316 is preferred when better corrosion resistance is needed. 303 improves machinability for turned parts. 17-4 PH is used when higher strength or hardness is required.

Stainless Steel GradeTypical UseNotes
304 Stainless SteelGeneral corrosion-resistant parts, fixtures, brackets, housings and device components.Widely used stainless steel with good corrosion resistance and broad application range.
316 Stainless SteelMarine, medical-style, chemical, food equipment and corrosion-critical parts.Better corrosion resistance than 304, especially in harsher environments.
303 Stainless SteelPrecision turned parts, fittings, shafts and components where machinability matters.Easier to machine than 304/316, but corrosion resistance is usually lower.
17-4 PH Stainless SteelHigh-strength parts, structural components, shafts and tooling-style applications.Used when strength and hardness are important; heat treatment condition should be reviewed.
416 Stainless SteelMachined shafts, screws and components requiring improved machinability.Good machinability, but corrosion resistance is lower than 304/316.
420 / 440 Stainless SteelWear-resistant or hardened components.Used where hardness and wear resistance are important; machining and finishing need review.

Process Selection

Stainless Steel CNC Machining Processes

Stainless steel projects often require careful process planning because stainless steel can be more difficult to machine than aluminum or brass. Tool wear, heat buildup, work hardening, burr formation and thread quality should be reviewed before production.

Finishing

Surface Finishing for Stainless Steel CNC Parts

Stainless steel surface finishing should be reviewed before machining because passivation, electropolishing, polishing, brushing and bead blasting can affect appearance, burrs, edges, surface roughness, corrosion resistance and inspection requirements. For medical-style, food equipment or customer-facing stainless parts, surface finish and cleaning requirements should be defined early.
