FULL MATERIAL TRACEABILITY — FROM MILL TO SHIPMENT

Aerospace procurement requires more than a good part. Every aerospace component we ship carries an unbroken chain of documentation from the material mill certificate to the CMM inspection report. Here’s how that chain works.

Material procurement
1.Mill certificate & heat batch tracking
Every raw material arrives with a mill certificate — alloy composition, mechanical properties, heat/lot number, and forge/cast number where applicable. We verify chemical composition matches the specification before stock acceptance. All certs retained for 10 years.
  • Mill Certificate (EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2)
Pre-machining
2.Drawing review & DFM — AS9102 FAI prep
Engineer reviews your drawing against the material spec and our process capability. Critical characteristics identified and flagged. Inspection plan created matching each GD&T callout to a measurement method. FAI (First Article Inspection) scope defined before first chips fly.
  • DFM Report + Inspection Plan
During machining
In-process SPC & critical dimension verification
Critical dimensions verified after each setup — not just at final inspection. Statistical Process Control applied on high-volume runs. Any out-of-control condition triggers immediate work-stop and root cause analysis before production continues.
  • SPC charts + in-process records
Final inspection
4.CMM dimensional report — 100% on critical features
Zeiss / Renishaw CMM measures every critical dimension defined in the inspection plan. Actual vs. nominal deviation reported for each feature. Non-conforming parts are quarantined and dispositioned before the batch ships — zero escape policy.

PRECISION CNC MACHINING — AEROSPACE ALLOY MATRIX

Aerospace materials demand different strategies — from tool geometry to cutting parameters to workholding. Here’s what we machine and what makes each alloy a challenge.

Ti-6Al-4V
// TITANIUM GRADE 5 · AMS 4928
  • Tensile strength:950 MPa
  • Machinability index:32
  • Density:4.43 g/cm³
  • Service temp.:315 °C
Aerospace: turbine blades · structural frames · landing gear components · fasteners · hydraulic fittings

Low thermal conductivity → heat builds in tool. Use sharp PVD-coated carbide, high coolant pressure, conservative feeds. Cutting dry is not permitted.
Inconel 718
// NICKEL SUPERALLOY · AMS 5662
  • Tensile strength:1,375 MPa
  • Machinability index:18
  • Hot hardness (800°C):High
  • Service temp.:700 °C
Aerospace: turbine discs · combustor casings · exhaust systems · high-temp fasteners · bleed air ducting

Work-hardens rapidly. Use small depth of cut, sharp tools. Tool life 3–5× shorter than stainless. Part pricing reflects dedicated tooling program.
Inconel 625
// NICKEL-CHROMIUM · AMS 5599
  • Tensile strength:1,034 MPa
  • Machinability index:22
  • Corrosion resistance:Excellent
  • Service temp.:980 °C
Aerospace: marine exhaust systems · chemical processing · seawater applications · bellows · flexible joints

Excellent corrosion resistance comes with very poor machinability. Requires aggressive coolant, low-vibration setups, and specialist tooling. Estimated 4× baseline cycle time.
Al 7075-T651
// AEROSPACE ALUMINUM · AMS 2770
  • Tensile strength:572 MPa
  • Machinability index:80
  • Strength-to-weight:Best Al
  • Corrosion resistance:Fair
Aerospace: fuselage skins · wing ribs · bulkheads · drone frames · satellite structures · missile casings

WHAT DRIVES AEROSPACE CNC MACHINING COST

Aerospace parts cost more than commercial CNC machining — for specific, defensible reasons. Here’s the honest breakdown of what drives the premium.

Material — exotic alloy premium is real
Inconel 718 raw material costs 8–12× more than aluminum 6061. Titanium Grade 5 is 4–6× more. Beyond material cost, exotic alloys consume 3–5× more cutting tool life — each tool change is an additional cost. Our quoting separates material cost from tooling cost so you can see exactly where the premium sits.
  • Highest impact
Material removal ratio — billet efficiency
Aerospace structural parts routinely remove 70–90% of the billet material. A 4kg billet yields a 400g part. Every kilogram machined away represents spindle time cost. Our DFM review assesses whether near-net-shape preforms (forgings, castings) could reduce removal ratio and cost for your application.
  • High impact
Inspection and documentation overhead
A commercial CNC part might have 5 minutes of inspection time. An aerospace part with full CMM, FAI, SPC, and PPAP documentation might have 60–90 minutes of quality overhead per part. This overhead is non-negotiable — it’s what makes the part certifiable. We quote it transparently as a line item.
  • Medium-high impact
5-axis complexity and single-setup requirement
Aerospace parts often have compound angles, multiple datum relationships, and feature interrelationships that demand 5-axis simultaneous machining in a single setup. 5-axis machine time is higher than 3-axis, but the elimination of repositioning errors on critical datum features is non-optional for aerospace tolerance stacks.
  • Medium impact
Quantity — aerospace prototypes are expensive
Setup cost for an Inconel 718 part with 5-axis machining and full FAI documentation might be $800–1,200. At 1 piece, that’s the entire unit cost plus material and cycle time. At 50 pieces, it’s $16–24/piece. Aerospace prototypes at 1–5 pieces carry the full weight of a qualified process — which is exactly what they need.
  • Scales with quantity

PRECISION AEROSPACE MACHINING — QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Are you AS9100 certified for aerospace CNC machining?

We hold ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016 certifications, which cover the quality management system elements required by most aerospace prime contractors. Full AS9100 certification is in implementation — current aerospace customers are qualified through customer-specific audit and supplier questionnaire processes. Contact us to discuss your qualification requirements before submitting an RFQ.
Can you machine titanium Ti-6Al-4V for aerospace applications?

Yes — Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5, AMS 4928) is one of our primary aerospace materials. We maintain dedicated PVD-coated carbide tooling programs for titanium, use high-pressure coolant to manage thermal load, and follow strict no-dry-cutting protocols. Mill certificates to EN 10204 3.1 included. Full material traceability from heat number to finished part.
Do you provide CMM inspection reports for aerospace parts?

Yes — CMM inspection on a Zeiss or Renishaw CMM in a temperature-controlled measurement room (20°C ±1°C). Reports show actual vs. nominal for every GD&T callout in your inspection plan. Available as per-part reports for critical aerospace applications or batch statistical reports for production quantities. Probe calibration certificates available.
Can you supply PPAP Level 3 documentation for aerospace production parts?

Yes — PPAP Level 1, 2, and 3 packages available. Level 3 includes design records, process flow diagram, PFMEA, control plan, MSA study, initial capability study (Cpk ≥ 1.67), qualified laboratory documentation, and sample parts with dimensional results. Allow 5 additional days for full Level 3 package preparation.
What’s the typical lead time for aerospace prototype CNC machining?

Aluminum 7075 aerospace prototypes: 3–5 days machining + 1 day CMM and documentation = 4–6 days total. Titanium Ti-6Al-4V: 5–8 days. Inconel 718 complex parts: 8–14 days (toolpath programming, slower cycle time, extended inspection). FAI adds 1 day. Rush available — discuss lead time requirements when submitting your RFQ.
Can you machine Inconel 718 and Inconel 625 for aerospace?

Yes — with dedicated tooling programs. Inconel 718 and 625 are among the most difficult materials to machine — machinability index 18–22 vs. 100 for free-cutting steel. We use sharp PVD-coated submicron carbide grades, aggressive coolant strategies, and conservative feeds to control work-hardening. Expect 3–5× longer cycle times and 3–5× higher tool consumption vs. stainless steel — reflected transparently in the quote.
Do you provide full material traceability for aerospace parts?

Yes — heat number to finished part. Raw material arrives with EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate. Heat/lot number is recorded on the job traveller and retained in our QMS. The CMM report references the heat number. Retained records available for 10 years. Type 3.2 certificates (with independent inspection authority) available on request for the highest traceability requirements.
Can you machine aerospace parts to surface roughness Ra 0.2μm?

Ra 0.2μm is achievable on 5-axis machined surfaces using high-speed finishing passes with small stepovers. Ra 0.4μm is standard on as-machined aerospace surfaces. For sealing surfaces or bearing seats requiring Ra 0.1μm or better, mirror polishing or ID honing is added as a post-machining operation. Specify your surface integrity requirement — we’ll confirm process capability in the DFM review.
