Description

Automotive components have always been in high demand. Although these parts can provide CNC machining parts manufacturers or factories with substantial profit margins due to their pricing, this is not always the case. The prices of automotive parts are often influenced by various factors, such as the complexity of the parts, manufacturing processes, materials, and brand considerations.

But today, we’re not here to delve into the profit margins of CNC machining parts, lol. We’re here to explore our production of 5 Axis CNC Machining Auto Parts – Auto Control Unit Housing.

OK, guys. This 5-axis cnc machining auto parts is an auto control unit housing. This auto part consists of two control unit housings combined. Through our strict tolerance control, this CNC-machined auto part can be assembled seamlessly, with no issues like jamming or misalignment.

What material is used for this Auto Parts – Auto Control Unit Housing?

The material used for this Auto Parts – Auto Control Unit Housing is magnesium alloy.Magnesium alloy is an alloy primarily composed of magnesium combined with other elements.

It is distinguished by its low density (approximately 1.8 g/cm³), high strength, substantial elastic modulus, excellent thermal conductivity, effective shock absorption, superior impact load-bearing capacity compared to aluminum alloys, and strong resistance to organic and alkaline corrosion.

The main alloying elements include aluminum, zinc, manganese, cerium, thorium, and small amounts of zirconium or cadmium. Magnesium alloys are widely utilized in portable equipment and the automotive industry to achieve weight reduction. Therefore, the client selected this material at the initial prototype design stage to take advantage of its properties.

What Manufacturing Process Is Used For This Auto Parts – Auto Control Unit Housing?

For this auto part, there are two main manufacturing processes to consider: CNC machining and die casting. For smaller quantities, we generally recommend CNC machining, as it offers higher precision and tighter tolerances compared to die casting. However, for large-scale production, die casting is typically more cost-effective and efficient.

The auto part we are discussing today is manufactured using CNC machining because the order quantity from the customer is relatively small, and they require a lower budget. Therefore, we opted for CNC machining.

First, we used 5-axis CNC machining to process the front groove and the surrounding assembly features. After completing this, the grooves on both sides inside the front recess (as indicated in the image below) required separate EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) with copper electrodes.

EDM does not require physical force, so the clamping requirements are relatively low; it only needs to be slightly fixed in place for the discharge operation. EDM uses copper electrodes, electrical current, and kerosene as a medium to create high temperatures instantaneously, causing the material to melt and evaporate.

This process helps to machine areas that are difficult to reach with conventional CNC machining, thereby achieving the dimensional requirements specified in the design drawings.

After the EDM process is completed, we then use a fixture to clamp the part for CNC machining the protruding side on the back. At this point, the machining process becomes straightforward and can be easily accomplished with a 3-axis CNC machine. Once machining is finished, the magnesium alloy product undergoes surface treatment to enhance corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and appearance.

WhatSurface Treatment IsUsedForThisAuto Parts?

For this particular auto part, no surface treatment was applied. However, if the customer has specific requirements, options such as chemical conversion coating, anodizing, micro-arc oxidation, or other surface treatments can be employed to achieve longer service life and a more attractive appearance.
