Its applications span various industries, from marine and chemical processing to aerospace and electrical equipment. Its counterparts are also impressive. For example, Monel® K500, while not as ductile as Monel® 400, surpasses it in nearly every other aspect (In addition to the lovely magnetism, lol).If you are interested in Monel® K500, you can read our article, which introduces various Monel® alloys:Monel® Material: A Comprehensive Guide to Properties, Applications, and Benefits

What Is Monel 400?

Monel 400 is a group of alloys of nickel (63% – 72%) and copper (less than 60%), with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon and silicon.

Because nickel and copper are mutually soluble in any proportion, it is a single-phase alloy. Monel 400 alloy has extremely high ductility. At sub-zero temperatures, strength and hardness increase, but ductility or impact resistance only slightly decreases. Even at liquid nitrogen temperature, there is no transition from ductility to brittleness.

The only thing that is not controllable in conventional production is that some of them are prone to magnetism, which may not be friendly for some products that do not strictly require magnetism, but this shortcoming cannot cover up its excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, high ductility, and good thermal conductivity.

Nomenclature of Monel 400:

What Is The Machinability Rating of Monel 400

According to the mechanical properties table above, combined with its very fast hardening speed during machining, it is relatively difficult to machine, and it needs to be turned and machined at low speeds and low feed rates. Based on the actual situation of our Baosheng machining, the machinability rating of Monel 400 is 45%,

What Should I Pay Attention To When Using Monel 400 For CNC Machining?

CNC Machining Techniques:

1.Turning: Monel 400 requires slow speeds and moderate feed rates to avoid excessive work hardening.

2.Drilling: Use sharp tools and appropriate lubricants to prevent work hardening and tool wear.

3.Milling: Similar to turning and drilling, maintaining moderate speeds and feeds is crucial.

Tooling:

1.Carbide Tools: Preferred for machining Monel 400 due to their hardness and wear resistance.

2.High-Speed Steel (HSS) Tools: Can be used, but they wear out faster than carbide tools.

Cutting Fluids:

1.Use of appropriate cutting fluids can help dissipate heat and reduce work hardening.

2.Coolants are essential to improve tool life and surface finish.

Work Hardening:

1.Monel 400 work-hardens rapidly, so it’s important to avoid letting the tool dwell on the material.

2.Continuous cuts are preferred over interrupted cuts to minimize the effects of work hardening.

Monel 400’s machinability rating is lower than many other metals due to its work-hardening characteristics, requiring careful consideration of tooling, speeds, feeds, and cutting fluids to achieve successful machining results.
