Automotive Manufacturing Processes for Different Project Needs
The correct manufacturing process depends on part function, material, required accuracy, production quantity, testing stage and tooling budget.
| Process | Best Suited For | Typical Automotive Parts |
|---|---|---|
| CNC Machining | Functional metal and plastic parts requiring precision | Uprights, hubs, housings, manifolds, shafts, fixtures |
| 3D Printing | Fast design iterations and complex prototype geometry | Ducts, clips, covers, interior models, test components |
| Sheet Metal Fabrication | Cut, bent and welded metal structures | Battery housings, brackets, panels, enclosures, cabinets |
| Rapid Tooling | Low-volume molded parts before production tooling | Lighting housings, trim, covers and functional plastic parts |
| Injection Molding | Repeat plastic production and consistent assemblies | Clips, housings, bezels, interior and exterior components |
| Stamping and Forming | Repeat sheet metal parts with justified tooling | Brackets, clips, covers and formed production components |
CNC Machining for Functional Automotive Parts
3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis CNC milling, CNC turning, EDM and grinding support precision metal and plastic parts for functional testing and low-volume manufacturing.
Critical dimensions, datum relationships and inspection requirements are reviewed before machining.
Automotive 3D Printing
SLA, SLS, MJF, FDM and metal additive manufacturing support fast design iterations, complex geometry and functional prototype development.
Process selection depends on strength, temperature, appearance, accuracy and testing requirements.
Sheet Metal Fabrication
Laser cutting, punching, bending, welding and assembly support brackets, enclosures, panels, battery-related structures and production equipment.
Rapid Tooling and Injection Molding
Rapid tooling shortens the path from validated prototype to low-volume molded parts.
After design approval, production tooling can support higher quantities and consistent repeat manufacturing.

Inspection and Verification
Critical dimensions, holes and threads were verified through in-process and final inspection.
Inspection methods included pin gauges, thread gauges, manual measurement and CMM verification for selected critical features.
Manufacturing Result
The completed components met the approved dimensional and assembly requirements for low-volume Formula racing use.
The reduced-setup machining strategy helped control feature relationships while supporting the lightweight geometry required by the design.

Application: Formula-Style Racing Vehicle
Part: Front Uprights / Steering Knuckles
Material: Aluminum 7075-T6
Process: 5-Axis CNC Machining
Production Type: Low-Volume Manufacturing
Surface Finish: As Machined
Critical Accuracy: ±0.01 mm
Lead Time: 10 Working Days, Excluding Shipping
Project Requirements
The front uprights connect the wheel hub, suspension, braking and steering systems.
Multiple mounting surfaces, precision bores and threaded holes had to maintain accurate positional relationships to support suspension alignment, steering response and reliable assembly.
Manufacturing Challenges
The components were machined from solid 7075-T6 aluminum billets and required extensive material removal.
The main challenges included:
• Multi-surface positional accuracy
• Precision bores and threaded holes
• Lightweight sections with deformation risk
• Controlled relationships between suspension interfaces
• Reliable inspection of critical features
5-Axis Machining Strategy
The uprights were produced using a 5-axis CNC machining strategy that provided access to multiple functional surfaces while reducing repeated repositioning.
High-speed roughing removed bulk material efficiently, while precision boring, deep-hole drilling, rigid tapping and controlled finishing were used for critical features.
Materials for Automotive Prototypes and Production Parts
Material selection depends on mechanical load, weight, temperature, wear, corrosion, appearance, electrical performance and manufacturing process.
Our engineers can review alternatives when a project requires improved machinability, formability, moldability or cost efficiency.
| Material Group | Common Applications |
|---|---|
| Aluminum | Lightweight housings, suspension components, hubs, brackets and thermal parts |
| Stainless Steel | Fittings, shafts, fluid components and corrosion-resistant assemblies |
| Carbon and Alloy Steel | Brake, engine, suspension, tooling and high-load components |
| Titanium | Lightweight, heat-resistant and high-performance components |
| Nylon and POM | Bushings, guides, covers, clips and functional plastic parts |
| ABS and Polycarbonate | Interior prototypes, housings and appearance parts |
| PMMA and Clear Resins | Lighting prototypes, lenses, light guides and transparent covers |
| Elastomers and Silicone | Seals, flexible covers and vibration-control components |

Automotive Manufacturing FAQs
What information is required for an automotive parts quote?
Please provide the 3D CAD model, dimensioned drawing, quantity, material, development stage, surface finish and critical quality requirements.
Include GD&T, assembly interfaces and inspection requirements in the 2D drawing where applicable.
Can you manufacture both prototypes and production parts?
Yes. Manufacturing support is available for concept prototypes, functional validation parts, pilot batches, rapid tooling and repeat production.
Which manufacturing processes are available?
Available processes include CNC machining, industrial 3D printing, sheet metal fabrication, rapid tooling, injection molding, stamping and surface finishing.
What CNC machining tolerances can you achieve?
Tolerance capability depends on material, geometry, feature size, datum structure and inspection method.
Selected critical CNC features can be evaluated down to ±0.01 mm, but this is not applied as a universal tolerance across every dimension.
Can you provide FAI and inspection reports?
Yes. Depending on the agreed project scope, available documentation may include First Article Inspection reports, dimensional reports, CMM reports, material certificates and Certificates of Conformance.
Can you manufacture EV and battery-related components?
Yes. Available manufacturing processes support custom housings, brackets, cooling components, mounts, enclosures and other development or production parts for electric-vehicle systems.
Can you support automotive certification requirements?
Certification and supplier-quality requirements should be submitted during RFQ review.
The project will be accepted only after the applicable manufacturing-facility certification and process scope have been confirmed.
How long does automotive prototype manufacturing take?
Lead time depends on process, material availability, part complexity, quantity, tooling, finishing and inspection requirements.
Simple CNC or 3D-printed parts may be scheduled faster than molded, welded or certification-controlled projects.
