What is Sheet Cutting?

Sheet cutting is a key manufacturing process that slices flat materials into custom shapes along a defined profile. At BaoSheng, we use high-powered CNC laser cutting and waterjet cutting to deliver precise results for both prototypes and mass production.

Our sheet cutting services support a wide range of materials, including:

  • Metals (steel, aluminum, copper, stainless steel, etc.)

  • Plastics (acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS, etc.)

  • Composites

  • Wood and Foam

  • Rubber & Gaskets

This process is also ideal for blank preparation in other fabrication methods like sheet metal bending, stamping, or welding. With tight tolerances, fast turnaround, and flexible material options, BaoSheng ensures every cut is accurate, reliable, and ready for assembly.

Laser Cutting and Waterjet Cutting Different

How are Laser Cutting and Waterjet Cutting Different?

Laser cutting uses concentrated heat to create precise 2D cuts, producing a narrow kerf, typically under 0.010″. It is ideal for thin metals, plastics, engraving, and part marking, offering speed and high accuracy.

Waterjet cutting uses high-pressure water to cut materials without heat, making it perfect for thicker metals, heat-sensitive materials, foams, gaskets, and plastics. While the kerf is wider (0.040″–0.050″), tolerances remain tight at ±0.010″.

At BaoSheng, we leverage both laser and waterjet cutting, selecting the best method for each material and project to ensure precision, efficiency, and safety for all custom parts.

  • High Precision: CNC laser and waterjet cutting deliver tight tolerances and clean edges for complex designs.

  • Versatile Materials: Cuts a wide range of materials including metals, plastics, composites, wood, foams, and rubber.

  • Minimal Material Waste: Accurate cutting reduces scrap and optimizes material usage.

  • Fast Turnaround: Efficient processes enable quick prototyping and mass production.

  • Custom Shapes: Ideal for complex 2D profiles, blanks, and preforms for further fabrication.

Applications of Sheet Cutting

Sheet cutting technology is extensively used to fabricate a diverse range of parts, each benefiting from the precision and versatility this method offers:

  • Prototypes & Custom Parts: Quickly produce one-off designs or small batches for testing and development.

  • Enclosures & Panels: Create precise metal or plastic housings, covers, and panels for electronics and machinery.

  • Gaskets & Seals: Cut heat-sensitive or soft materials like rubber, foam, and gaskets with high accuracy.

  • Industrial Components: Prepare blanks and parts for bending, stamping, or welding in manufacturing.

  • Decorative & Architectural Elements: Produce intricate patterns, signage, or decorative panels with clean edges.

FAQs

What Is the Smallest Part Size BaoSheng Can Cut?

At BaoSheng, we can cut features as small as 0.25” x 0.25”, depending on part complexity.

Very small parts, particularly those under 2” x 2”, may require tabbing or bridging to keep them secure during cutting and prevent movement between machine slats.

For holes and cutouts, the minimum size should be larger than the material thickness or 0.050”, whichever is greater, ensuring accurate and clean results.

Extruded materials, including metals and certain plastics, exhibit a grain direction, visible as linear patterns formed during production. Similarly, hardwood and wood veneer have grain based on natural growth.

Parts are generally weaker along the grain and may crack more easily in that direction. If the grain orientation affects functionality or appearance, please indicate it clearly with a technical drawing or notes. Otherwise, Baosheng will follow industry best practices to optimize cutting and maintain part quality.

Yes, Baosheng can quote projects using shim stock or spring stock. If a standard gauge of your design is available, we can provide a direct quote for your project.

Thin metal stocks, such as shim material, are often supplied in roll form, which means flatness is not guaranteed.

For cutting, shim stock may need to be sandwiched with sacrificial material to ensure clean cuts, which could increase costs slightly.
